Half Truths

As the song of referendum plays her closing and contentious verse again
And the hard rains of democracy erodes half of the nation’s dreams away
We couldn’t get it wrong, how could we get it wrong again?

Now the hokey cokey’s over and it’s time for us to shake it all about
Seems our dancing days are done so I presume we’ll have to sit the next one out
You know we’re never wrong, and we’ll never get it wrong again

We know every word to every song
Faithfully and proud we sing along
And we watch all the programs that they play
We can’t switch it off or turn away

I’m still retrieving splinters from the time I spent balanced on the fence
That no facts were aired or offered is my only frail and frivolous defence
We couldn’t get it wrong, how could we get it wrong again?

You can call me Captain Cynic but it seems we’ve all been flippant and naive
Fleeced by propaganda through a stubbornness in passion to believe
You know we’re never wrong, and we’ll never get it wrong again

We know every word to every song
Faithfully and proud we sing along
And we watch all the programs that they play
We can’t switch it off or turn away

As the mud begins to fly with accusations from each side of the debate
I’m astounded by the ignorance of friends tangled in half-truths and hate
We couldn’t get it wrong, how could we get it wrong again?

We are given the impression that our vote has influenced the outcome planned
But conspiracy dictates that other powers really had the upper hand
You know we’re never wrong, and we’ll never get it wrong again

We know every word to every song
Faithfully and proud we sing along
And we watch all the programs that they play
We can’t switch it off or turn away
