Barefoot Blues

I went down to Emanuel House and acquired some dead mans shoes
I pulled them on to my weary feet and they cured my barefoot blues
Then I walked the streets of this old town content as a man can be
With the silent ghost of William Booth watching over me

I trudged from Canning Circus straight down Maid Marion Way
My dead mans shoes still keeping my barefoot blues at bay
I was looking for the Sneinton Cowboy he was good for twenty notes
But I found him quite elusive and he would not be exposed

So I took some time in the sunshine as I pondered my next step
And my dead mans shoes delivered me to the banks beside the Trent
Then I walked within the shadow of some mighty willow trees
And I sat beneath their branches in the cooling summer breeze

I closed my eyes and I listened to the rivers gentle song
And cast my sleepy mind adrift in her currents smooth and strong
In my dreaming I was dancing with the woman who was my wife
Our hearts were full and love had bound us and we danced with all our life

Then my dreaming took a turning and old cupid took to fall
For dead mans shoes have no choice but to heed the master’s call
In my dreaming was walking away from all that made me good
At the end of this resentful path in loneliness I stood

I came awake in darkness and felt the bite of truth
Alone here in the blackness if I needed clearer proof
I took out the leather laces and removed my dead mans shoes
And I tossed them in the river and it cured my dead mans blues
